Degrees

The University of Florida’s Department of Agricultural Education and Communication (AEC) is among the country’s best in developing leaders, educators and communicators to meet society’s challenges in agricultural and life sciences. The Department offers a number of graduate and undergraduate degrees and certificates in leadership.

Undergraduate Degrees in Leadership

Bachelor of Science - Communication & Leadership Development

This degree prepares students for entry into agribusiness and communication positions related to human resource development, corporate training and development, political interests and agricultural literacy. The Communication and Leadership Development degree can be customized, giving students the flexibility to concentrate on a career area of their interest while preparing them for a range of possible career options. Coursework centers on leadership and communication courses that include digital media, campaign strategies, interpersonal skills and presentation development. Students studying for this degree can also be eligible for the university-wide Minor in Leadership.

Minor - Leadership

Students in this interdisciplinary leadership minor will develop fundamental skills, capacities and knowledge necessary to assume leadership, supervisory or management positions in public, private and non-profits organizations. Because the minor is interdisciplinary, it draws on the expertise of faculty and staff in colleges and departments across UF, including Agricultural and Life Sciences, Business Administration, Health and Human Performance, Journalism and Communications, Psychology, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Global Leadership & Change Certificate

degree-challenge2050 CFL degree landing pageThis certificate is designed for undergraduates at any level or major interested in addressing the challenges associated with our growing global population. The overall goal of the certificate is to empower students to take action in addressing the unstructured, complex and adaptive challenges of population growth, such as sustainable development and food security, facing the global community. This certificate will teach those critical skills needed to establish effective partnerships with stakeholders and to holistically tackle the challenges associated with the issue of population growth.

This certificate is offered by CALS and is a key component of the Challenge 2050 Project. Visit the Challenge 2050 Project page to find out more.


Graduate Degrees in Leadership

Leadership development specializations prepare students for educational leadership, training and outreach positions in Extension, agricultural, community and governmental agencies. Visit the AEC website for more details on graduate offerings and certificates.

Master’s of Science Program in Leadership Development

Students in the Master’s program focuses on a core of agricultural education and communication courses along with an emphasis in designing educational/training programs, professional presentation enhancement, leadership development, teaching/training methods and interpersonal communication.

The on-campus and master’s at a distance program typically take two years to complete. For more information on the distance program, visit the AEC e-Learning Institute.          

Doctoral Program in Leadership Development

The doctoral program in leadership development focuses on leadership theory and measurement, critical and creative thinking and leadership in cross-cultural settings. Students will complete a research and theory-based program with a strong knowledge of training and development, and human resource management.  Graduates are prepared for positions in both public and private sectors in both industry and educational settings.

Minor in Leadership

Certificate in Leadership in Agricultural and Natural Resources

With this certificate, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of leadership through theoretical development and application (praxis) in agriculture and natural resource settings, promotion of leadership in organizational and community settings with an emphasis on teamwork, conflict management and interpersonal communication.
